ACT (American College Test)
The ACT is the most commonly used college entrance exam in North Dakota and is used for college admissions, scholarships, and placement.

SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)
The SAT is a college entrance exam accepted by all U.S. colleges and universities. While the ACT is more commonly taken in our region, some students choose the SAT based on their testing strengths or college preferences.
What to know:
- Can be taken instead of or in addition to the ACT
- Focuses on Reading, Writing, and Math

AP (Advanced Placement) Exam
The AP Exam is a college-level test taken after completing an AP course. Many colleges award credit or placement based on AP scores.
What to know:
- Exams are administered each May
- Registration information is provided through AP teachers
- Scores may help students earn college credit

ASVAB (Career Exploration & Military)
The ASVAB helps students explore career interests and is required for military enlistment.
What to know:
- Identifies strengths in different career areas
- No military commitment is required to take the test
- Offered at South High School (see Student Services for dates)
WorkKeys (Career Readiness Assessment)
WorkKeys measures real-world job skills and can lead to a National Career Readiness Certificate.
What to know:
- Focuses on workplace skills like applied math and reading
- Recognized by employers nationwide
- Helpful for students entering the workforce or technical careers

Local Opportunities:
- ZAPS ACT Prep Seminar (when offered at South or in the area)
Tips for Success:
- Start preparing 2–3 months before your test date
- Take a full-length practice test first
- Focus on improving weaker areas
- Retake tests if needed—this is common
Suggested Testing Timeline:
- 10th Grade: Practice tests (PreACT )
- 11th Grade: Take ACT (spring)
- 12th Grade: Retake ACT/SAT if needed
