Military Ball

The Fargo Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps hosted its annual Military Ball on January 28. Cadets invited guests to participate in a night of dancing and fun with a theme of 1920's Casino. They also enjoyed a wonderful speech from Chief Master Sergeant Brandi Growsman, the Senior Enlisted Leader of the 119th Security Forces Squadron of the North Dakota Air National Guard, gave a speech.

Physics Visit

South High School AP Physics students visited the Physics Department at North Dakota State University in December. The students attended a variety of physics demonstrations and built sand take home drones.

Vocational& Tech Ed Open House

South's Vocational/Technical Education Department hosted an Open House on January 31. Students and staff got a firsthand look at the exciting courses offered, jumping into hands-on activities in manufacturing, construction and woods, photo and graphic design, automotive, engineering and robotics, and computer programming.

Mental Health & Suicide Awareness

South Wrestling, in cooperation with Boy Scout Troop 225, dedicated its annual youth wrestling tournament to mental health awareness & suicide prevention. This initiative was led by Tim Lentz, a wrestling team captain and member of Troop 225, as part of his Eagle Scout project. His friend and former Troop 225 member Liam Medd died by suicide in 2021. To support the cause, the varsity wrestlers voluntarily gave up one of their scheduled competitions to honor missing individuals who have died by suicide. The event raised $3,700 to donate to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to support mental health awareness suicide prevention.

Stick it to Cancer

The 15th Annual Stick it to Cancer Event hosted by Fargo high school hockey teams at the Scheels Arena on January 14 raised nearly $53,000 for Lend A Hand Up through donations, sponsorships, T-shirt sales, and match funding. The funds raised will be distributed to by Lend A Hand Up to help area families experiencing cancer and other health issues.

STEM Night

South High students from Key Club, DECA, and PAY volunteered to help facilitate the stations at Ed Clapp's interactive STEM Night for its families on January 30. The event, attended by more than 100 students, featured 10 carnival booth-style activity stations with activities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to South football players, Xander Moody and Keaton Docken, who signed their letters of intent to participate in college football this morning on National Signing Day.

Moody will continue his education and football career at Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota. He is a three-time letter-winner in football at South High and was named to the Eastern Dakota Conference All Conference Football Team this past fall. He also served as one of the captains for the Bruin football team. Moody also participates in wrestling and boys track and field at South High.

Docken will continue his education and football career at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He is a three-time letter-winner in football and an Eastern Dakota Conference All Conference Football Team Honorable Mention in 2023 and 2024.

Summer School 2025

Registration for Fargo Public Schools' Summer School 2025 opens next Monday, February 3. Todd Olson

February signals the beginning of preparations in the Activities Department for the numerous tournaments hosted in Fargo each year at the close of the winter sports season. The Metro Area Tournament Committee, a non-profit that serves as the umbrella organization for managing tournaments in Fargo and West Fargo, is hosting the State Wrestling Tournament and the State AA Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament in Fargo this year. Read more about the tournaments hosted locally in this column by Director of Student Activities Todd Olson.

The three comprehensive high schools at FPS introduced Proficiency Days in the Spring of 2024 as a structured academic intervention for students with missing assessments and/or failing grades. In North Dakota, the month is celebrated with the theme Igniting Potential, Inspiring Excellence. AP registration deadline

Students who are taking Advanced Placement courses that are taken only during semester 2 (January 21-June 5) and want to take an AP exam for these courses must register and pay for their assessment(s) by next Friday, February 14. Students need only take two steps to order a test: obtain the AP course code from their instructor and join the AP Classroom, and go to Total Registration and pay for the exam. For Total Registration links, look for your school’s tab on the left side of the FPS AP website. Early Release February 14

Fargo Public Schools will release students two hours early from school next Friday, December 14. Contact your school for more information regarding early release days and how they will affect your child's schedule.

In recent years, the FPS Speech-Language Pathologists have participated in panel presentations with various regional universities, sharing insights about their experiences working in schools. These panels, aimed at students in Communication Sciences and Disorders programs or in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology programs, provided an in-depth look at the role of an SLP across different educational levels in public schools.

Giving Hearts Day Image

Giving Hearts Day, a 24-hour online giving event, is coming up on Thursday, February 13. The day is a large fundraising event that benefits North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota non-profits. Each organization finds a sponsor to generously match donations. Fargo Public Schools Development Foundation and Trollwood Performing Arts School are both taking part. Tax deductible donations can be scheduled now. You may also wait to give on February 13.

Progress Reports and Grading for Students with IEPs in General Education

In support of our commitment to equitable and transparent grading practices, FPS is implementing Standards-Based Instruction (SBI) and Evidence-Based Reporting (EBR) for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in general education settings. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, asterisks will no longer be used on progress reports K-12 to indicate student proficiency levels.

However, when students and staff are well-prepared, the response can be swift and effective. Emergency drills are vital to help build a school-wide culture of safety. Teaching students and staff exactly what to do, whether it's a fire, a lockdown situation, or a tornado, prepares them to respond in the first moments in the safest way possible.
